Solar Myths & Misconceptions: Get the Solar Facts
Myth: I should wait because solar is getting less expensive or new technology is just around the corner.
Fact: Solar technology has changed little in the past 20 years. Unlike your phone, tv or car, solar panels are simple in design and construction and the advancements in efficiency have been far outweighed by the savings of getting the panels installed as soon as possible. Solar is a mature energy source that has been in use for decades. There is no reason to wait.
Myth: Solar rebates and tax credits have expired.
Fact: Visit our Tax Credits & Rebates page and you will see that there are many local rebates available from Kansas City power companies like MGE and KCP & L; tax deductions available from the state of Missouri and the federal tax credits for solar were extended through 2016.
Myth: Solar power doesn’t work on cloudy days or in cold or snowy climates.
Fact: Solar panels are more efficient in cooler temperatures and produce almost as much energy on cloudy days as they do in sunlight. If your panels are completely covered by snow, then they won’t produce energy, but once the snot blows off, they will go right back to producing energy and saving you money. Consider that the highest concentration of residential solar rooftop panels is in Germany, a climate very similar to Kansas City.
Myth: Solar panels require a lot of maintenance and are expensive to maintain.
Fact: Solar panels have no moving parts and require almost no maintenance other than hosing them off once a year. Modern systems come with built in monitoring that will actually tell you when it is time to hose off the panels or if there is an issue.
Myth: I need to buy expensive batteries to store my electricity.
Fact: Nearly all modern solar systems are tied into the electrical grid. Any excess power produced will be fed back into the grid through a system called “net metering.” With net metering, you will get credited for the electricity you feed into the system and only charged for electricity you use above the amount you have fed into the system. If you are “off the grid,” then you will require a battery or generator back up to have access to electricity when you are not producing it, but most modern homes are conveniently tied to the grid.
Myth: Solar is so expensive it will never pay for itself.
Fact: Most solar panel installations pay for themselves in less than 10 years. And with the tax incentives, rebates and financing options, you may be able to install your new solar system with no out of pocket costs. The idea that solar is for the rich and whacky is long past, solar is for people that want to reduce their monthly electrical bills and reduce our countries dependency on fossil fuels like coal, oil & natural gas.
Myth: Solar panels cause damage to my roof.
Fact: Properly installed solar panels actually protect and preserve your roof and extend the life of the shingles underneath. Further, most solar panel systems aren’t attached directly to the roof, rather they are attached to a railing system. Our installers use a metal flashing and add sealants around the railing mounts to act as an extra barrier to protect your home. If your roof is in need of repairs, it is best to make them before you install a new solar panel system. We will inspect your roof during our consultation and prior to any installation.
Myth: Installing solar panels will increase my property tax and make it harder to sell my home.
Fact: In Missouri, solar panel installations are tax-exempt and won’t raise your property taxes. They will, however increase the value of your home and, according to the Department of Energy, increase the speed with which your home sells. Solar panels return a much high return on investment in monthly electric bill savings and increased home value than a new pool or deck.
